REPORT: White Sox Have A New Primary Free Agent Target

-

The White Sox traded for Nomar Mazara at the Winter Meetings and Rick Hahn was quick to point out that they weren’t done adding to their right field mix in 2020. While Mazara is still considered young, he’s played in four MLB seasons and has pretty much been an average hitter at best. Meanwhile, the White Sox have also added Edwin Encarnacion in addition to Yasmani Grandal to their lineup.

Even after getting Encarnacion, the White Sox remain interested in the free agent market to add another outfielder next to Mazara. According MLB.com’s to Mark Feinsand, Hahn has a new target. The White Sox have previously been linked to Marcell Ozuna and Nick Castellanos, but Feinsand is reporting that the White Sox are now focussing in on Yasiel Puig.

Puig, 29, isn’t the star that he once looked like he’d be after his rookie season with the Dodgers in 2013, but he’d still be another solid bat for the White Sox. The right-handed hitter has a career .823 OPS, with a decent .348 OBP.

There hasn’t been much of a market for Puig this offseason, so the White Sox could potentially sign him on the cheap. They probably want to work out a contract that includes a club option for 2021, just like they’ve done for Gio Gonzalez and Encarnacion.

In 2019, Puig slashed .267/.327/.458, with the Reds and Indians in 149 games.
