Whit Merrifield is the best available player at the trade deadline, but ever since his name was thrown into trade rumors the Royals have reportedly asked for a king’s ransom. The Cubs have been interested in the second baseman, as he’d be a perfect fit at the top of the lineup and give the team another good hitter to hopefully boost the offense which is in desperate need of help.
The Cubs are still interested in a deal for the 30-year-old, but the Royals aren’t backing off their high asking price.
Merrifield signed a four-year, $16.25 million extension with the Royals and has an option for 2023.
The Royals have reportedly been asking for three MLB-ready players in a trade for Merrifield.
Oh well. If only Mark DeRosa was the Royals GM, the Cubs would already have gotten this trade done.
