Mitch Trubisky Took Another Big Step Forward in Ugly Win

-

People will continue to knock on Mitch Trubisky because that’s pretty much the train they’ve chosen to board, fair or not. The fact of the matter is the Chicago Bears quarterback is showing marked progress in the second half of this season. They may not like it, but it’s the truth. His recent showings have proven it.

In the first six games of this season, Trubisky posted a quarterback rating of 100 or better in two games. In the six that followed, he’s had three including two against division rivals in Detroit and Green Bay. His day in San Francisco that helped seal the 11th win of this season was his fourth in seven games. A 113.51 effort where he threw just four incompletions (25-of-29) for 246 yards and a touchdown.

For the season, Trubisky has now thrown for 3,060 yards with 24 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. That’s good for a season passer rating of 96.04. That with missing two games due to a shoulder injury. What else does the guy have to do in order to prove that he has the capacity to be a franchise quarterback?

Mitch Trubisky doesn’t have to be a stat machine to win yet

Part of the problem is people keep trying to compare him to the likes of Patrick Mahomes. A guy who has put up video game numbers this season for the Kansas City Chiefs. While there’s no denying he’s been superior to Trubisky in that sense, the fact of the matter is he has advantages in his favor from more time in that offensive system to better personnel around him. Tyreek Hill, Travis Kelcy, Eric Fisher, and Anthony Sherman are all Pro Bowl starters.

The Bears have none. Tarik Cohen was the closest anybody got but he got in because of his special teams work. Trubisky has much better personnel around him than last year but nobody can say he’s had much star power. Comparisons aside, it’s not like he needs to be that stat guy either.

Chicago has a great defense. They can run the ball well enough. He’s figuring out that he doesn’t have to get crazy with his decisions in order for this team to win football games. There will still be hiccups to come. That’s the nature of learning to play the position at a high level. Yet for some people to say he’s holding the team back?

That’s entirely unfair. If anything he’s been a big reason they’ve won some of these games. This latest in San Francisco is no exception.
