Cordarrelle Patterson Thinks He Can Fix The Bears Tight End Issue

-

Cordarrelle Patterson is already earning his money. Despite signing a rather expensive contract back in March, he’s quickly become everything the Chicago Bears expected and more. He remains one of the best kick returners in the NFL and has also developed into a complete special teams ace. However, don’t mistake that for a man who is satisfied. Patterson loves football and wants every chance to play more snaps if possible.

Even if that means switching positions.

Jason Lieser of the Chicago Sun-Times revealed that this is actually something that was discussed as far back as August. One that would see Patterson, who has a bigger 6’4 frame, switching to tight end. The wide receiver made it clear he’d be open to the idea and that he could make the most of it. Given the struggles of Trey Burton, Adam Shaheen, and the rest of that position group it’s not exactly a hard sell these days.

Cordarrelle Patterson certainly can’t be any worse

Is such a move possible? Anything is possible but the likelihood looks remote at this point. The Bears like Patterson where he is as a special teams stalwart and part-time receiver. Tight end is a different position with different responsibilities. Yes he’s big and yes he’s fast. He also would be a liability as a blocker and isn’t savvy at running the types of routes requires either. It would take a full offseason to even begin to attack such issues.

That said, Patterson can’t possibly be worse than what the Bears currently have. Shaheen is almost certainly gone next offseason. Burton is an unknown quantity with a growing list of injury issues. Ben Braunecker? Jesper Horsted? Not exactly legitimate weapons. If the team truly wanted to give him a shot, he has the body type and the mindset to make a go of it.
