Next Cubs Manager Might Already Be On Joe Maddon’s Bench

Every indication points to the Cubs moving on from manager Joe Maddon following the 2019 season and that was pretty much cemented after their four-game sweep at home that eliminated the Cubs from the division race this past weekend.

Maddon’s five-year contract is up, so it’s not like the Cubs will fire him, but all signs point to the front office heading into a different direction to lead the team on the field. The first name that seems to pop up is David Ross and although he could potentially be the next Cubs manager, MLB reporter Jon Heyman thinks there’s someone else who will be the leading candidate to replace Maddon.

That person is currently Maddon’s bench coach for the Cubs, Mark Loretta. But at this point, it’s only speculation from Heyman.

“At this time it’s speculation – I think Mark Loretta is the most likely candidate to be the Cubs’ manager,” Heyman said on the Mully & Haugh Show on Monday morning. “He did take a job there coaching, and everyone seems to respect him. His name is coming up with other teams now. Not that that’s the reason, but I do think that he will be a very strong candidate to be the manager.”

Heyman did bring up Ross and Mark DeRosa as possible candidates, but he said it’s unclear if either of the two want to jump into a managerial position at this time.

The Cubs hired Loretta this past offseason after Brandon Hyde was plucked by the Orioles to become their new manager. This is Loretta’s first MLB coaching job after working in the Padres’ front office following his retirement in 2009.

Speaking of the Padres, they might also be interested in Loretta, as they recently fired Andy Green.
