Mitch Trubisky MVP Odds Went Through Some Wild Changes

-

A lot of people laughed when the news came out that there were actual Mitch Trubisky MVP odds for the 2019 season. Plenty of critics believe the idea of the Chicago Bears quarterback having a shot at that award is laughable. That’s probably why the number was set at 200/1 when Las Vegas oddsmakers released their projections for the coming year.

The favorites for the award are the usual names: Aaron Rodgers, Patrick Mahomes, Tom Brady, Drew Brees, and Ben Roethlisberger among others. Trubisky had a good season in 2018 but nowhere near the numbers those other guys have had in the past. He hasn’t taken that next step into upper tier stat production. So while he’s proven he can win games, he’s been relegated to more of an expert “driver of a fast car.”

He has skill at what he does, but the car itself does most of the work. However, it appears there are a lot of people out there who don’t share the same lack of faith that Trubisky can become great. According to Mike Florio of NBC Sports, the line on his MVP odds have dropped drastically since being released. All the way to 50/1. Dan Katz of Pardon My Take believes this is a good sign that some smart people know what they’re doing.

Mitch Trubisky MVP march would forever silence doubters

The Bears have only had an MVP winner once in their franchise history. That came in 1977 when Walter Payton claimed the honor. That season he ran for over 1,800 yards and scored 16 touchdowns while dragging a frankly mediocre team to a 9-5 record and the first playoff berth in Chicago in 14 years. These days no other position gets recognition for the award outside of quarterbacks.

That means Trubisky is the only hope for the Bears. One thing is for sure. He’s the best hope they’ve had to do it in a long, long time. Some may argue Jay Cutler had a shot back in 2011 but he wasn’t beating Rodgers that year. No other QB has gotten remotely close to a high enough level. With this offensive system and Trubisky’s skill level, it feels at least reasonably possible.

If nothing else, winning that award would forever silence the many doubters about whether the Bears made a mistake taking him #2 overall in 2017. There will be some holdouts who say a Super Bowl will determine that, but it’s not true. The height of individual achievement for a quarterback in the NFL is MVP. Love him or hate him, such an honor would demand respect.
