According to MLB Pipeline, the White Sox currently have four top-100 prospects. This doesn’t include Edgar Quero, as he recently graduated from the list due to his time with the major league club. The other name that is no longer included on the list is Colson Montgomery, as he fell off the list after the first update.
Prior to the 2025 season, Colson Montgomery took a tumble on most top-100 prospect lists, as he had a rough 2024 season. However, he was still ranked in the mid 60s due to his track record in the previous seasons. Before that, Montgomery was considered a top-30 prospect in baseball.
Now, Montgomery’s struggles over the last year and a half have fans concerned that he may no longer be a part of the future of the White Sox, as he once was predicted to be a staple in the next great White Sox team. This is a valid concern, as in 2024, his first season in AAA, he hit .214 with 18 homers and 63 RBIs, adding a .329 OBP and 164 strikeouts over 130 AAA games. While the power numbers were encouraging, there were a lot of underlying issues that contributed to a lower average season.
Those issues continued into the 2025 season, as he started off hitting .160 with a .227 OBP and 34 strikeouts in the month of April for the Knights, prompting the White Sox to send him to Arizona to work with hitting coordinator Ryan Fuller.
Since his return, Montgomery has been better. Montgomery returned to game action on May 13th and he hit .274 over 51 at-bats in the month of May, adding two homeruns, seven RBIs, while walking six times compared to 14 strikeouts. This was very encouraging to see, as it seemed like Montgomery had made the right adjustments in Arizona.
However, Montgomery hit a rough patch right after that in the first two weeks of June, as he hit .167 between June 4th and June 21st. This wasn’t what the White Sox wanted to see, as it looked like he made significant progress after returning from Arizona.
But, a recent hot stretch has once again changed the narrative, as since June 24th, Montgomery is 11 for 22, adding four homeruns and eight RBIs in that timeframe. This is an encouraging sign, as it gives him a .281 average, a .338 OBP, a .672 slugging percentage, six homeruns, and 16 RBIs in the month of June, which is exactly what you want to see.
Colson Montgomery entering today since returning to Triple-A on May 13th:
.899 OPS
125 wRC+
8.7% walk rateThen he absolutely pummels a heater left over the middle today. OPS over 1.000 last 2 weeks now. Lot of people have written him off, but the 23-year-old is finding it. https://t.co/snmHtRzA4O

While his last five games have significantly changed his June, there are still some concerns with Montgomery, as on the season, he is hitting .217 with a .294 OBP, adding 11 homeruns, 34 RBIs, and 20 walks compared to 83 strikeouts.
However, with Montgomery seemingly hitting everything in sight over the last week, it may be time to call him and up and see what he can do, as perhaps a hot streak in AAA could help translate over to some major league success. Montgomery for the longest time was penciled into the infield of the future. Now, with a new GM, one who didn’t draft Montgomery, things have changed for a few different reasons.
Montgomery has almost 200 games in AAA and while it has been mostly underwhelming, there has been some good as of late and he’s only 23. The White Sox might as well call him up during this lost season to see what he can do, then make a determination on whether he is going to be apart of the future or not.
If Montgomery can continue his hot stretch into the MLB, there could be hope that he could regain his spot in the infield of the future for the White Sox, but if he struggles, it may take him out of the picture completely, as the White Sox have a ton of middle infield prospects that are having good seasons in the minor leagues.
This is the time for the White Sox to finally figure it out, as they aren’t competing for anything, so the stakes are low. Plus, being on a hot streak can help Montgomery a bit, as when everything is looking like a beach ball to a hitter, it doesn’t really matter who’s pitching. Calling Montgomery up could give him a confidence boost, but it can also give clarity to the team on Montgomery’s status for the future.
While it remains to be seen whether the White Sox are considering calling up Montgomery, they might as well figure it out with Montgomery now, especially while he’s on a hot streak, before the games start to mean something.
