White Sox Prospect Earns A Quick Promotion After Dominant Start

-

The White Sox have done a good job of developing homegrown pitching talent over the years, as they have drafted and developed many high level pitchers. Guys like Chris Sale, Carlos Rodon, Garrett Crochet, and Davis Martin are just a few of the more recent arms that fit in that category.

Now, the White Sox will look to recreate that with Noah Schultz, Hagen Smith, Tanner McDougal, and other arms that are close to the big leagues. Those are all the high profile names that the White Sox get to work with, as all of them are in or near the major leagues.

However, there is another name that has been making waves in the minor leagues, one that could soon join that group of pitchers above. That would be Gabe Davis, the White Sox 5th round pick in last year’s draft. Davis is an intimidating presence on the mound, as he stands at six feet, nine inches tall.

After a solid start to the season, according to James Fegan of Sox Machine, the White Sox are promoting Davis to the Birmingham Barons. This is impressive, as Davis has only thrown 27 total innings in the minor leagues.

After being drafted, Davis didn’t make any appearances in affiliated baseball for the White Sox, as his minor league debut came at the start of this season. Davis got his first action with the Winston-Salem Dash, the High-A affiliate of the White Sox.

So far, in 27 innings, Davis has a 2.63 ERA. He has struck out 33 batters while walking seven, en route to a very good 1.06 WHIP. Hitters also haven’t had much luck against him, as they are only hitting .222.

This is a very impressive start to his minor league career and this is a well deserved promotion for Davis. While he mainly was a reliever in his last season for Oklahoma State, he has been working as a starter in the White Sox organization.

Davis has been going 3-4 innings per start, so he has been a bit limited in how far the White Sox are letting him go in games. However, this will allow him to be more versatile, as he can fit either in the bullpen or in the rotation. This will allow him to find his way to Chicago quicker.

Davis features a mid to high 90s fastball, so he could be a valuable late inning reliever for the White Sox. Davis’ progress is a testament to the White Sox player development, as Davis had a 5.61 ERA in college, now he looks like one of the fastest rising pitching prospects in the organization.
