White Sox Have A Clear Solution To Fix Their Catcher Position

-

The White Sox have scored 21 runs over the last two games as the offense has been firing on all cylinders. This is partially because of their infielders, as they have one of the better young infields in the major leagues. When it’s all said and done, they could potentially have three players with 4+ WAR in their infield this season.

Additionally, despite concerns about what the outfield would look like going into the year, they have a surplus of solid outfielders, and are going to run into an issue with who will still be on the team when they are all healthy.

However, one spot the White Sox have struggled to get consistent offensive production out of this year has been the catcher position. This is mainly because Kyle Teel has yet to play a game this season, and in his stead, there have been some disappointing performances behind the plate. Drew Romo has provided some pop when he gets in the lineup, but Edgar Quero has struggled. According to Baseball Reference, Edgar Quero currently has -.3 WAR and is hitting .181. This is not what you want to see out of your starting catcher.

It would be silly to fully give up on Quero, as he’s just 23 and has only 108 at-bats this season. However, he is in clear need of a reset at AAA to get back on track. Additionally, the White Sox are winning more games than they are losing, which could put them in a playoff hunt late into the season. To keep that up, they will need more production from their catching position. While they do have Kyle Teel, it is unclear when he will return, as he should have been back a month ago.

With that being the case, the White Sox should consider calling up Korey Lee, as he has been pretty good in AAA this season. So far in 40 games, he’s hitting .234 with a .300 OBP. However, he’s added seven home runs, 24 RBIs, and seven stolen bases. While those numbers aren’t going to earn him an All-Star appearance, they aren’t bad. Additionally, he has been on a tear in the month of May, as he is hitting .299 with a .329 OBP, adding three home runs and 14 RBIs. Now would be the perfect time to call him up.

With Korey Lee, you know what you’re gonna get from him behind the plate. According to Baseball Savant, he graded out as an average catcher last season, with a well-above average pop time. Considering how the White Sox have performed behind the plate this season, this would be a significant upgrade.

We know what Korey Lee can do at the major league level, and right now that is better than what Quero provides. Long-term Quero is still going to be a good player, but he clearly needs a reset. Calling Lee up would help the team now and allow Quero to clear his mind and get back on track in AAA. The White Sox should consider calling up Lee and sending down Quero, because at this point, we are unsure when Teel is coming back.
