White Sox DFA Amaya Again To Make Room For Meidroth

-

Chase Meidroth is set to return to the White Sox lineup ahead of their three-game series in Kansas City. To make room on the active roster, the White Sox designated Jacob Amaya for assignment

This marks the second time that Amaya has been DFA’d by the White Sox this season. The infielder has appeared in 37 games but has only recorded seven hits in 66 at-bats. While he does provide solid defense up the middle, his lack of offensive production has made it difficult for him to hold onto a roster spot.

The 26-year-old is slashing .106/.139/.121 with 45 strikeouts. After getting DFA’d by the White Sox and clearing waivers earlier this year, he returned to the organization and began to show signs of life at the plate in Triple-A Charlotte. In 132 plate appearances, he slashed .291/.402/.464 with a 15.2% walk rate for the Knights.

Amya was given another opportunity with the big league club after Meidroth was placed on the injured list.  If he can clear waivers once again, there could be a path for him to return to the organization, given his age and not being arbitration-eligible.

Meidroth landed on the 10-day IL on August 7th with a right thumb contusion, an injury the White Sox infielder suffered on July 30 when he was struck in the hand by a pitch in the bottom of the fifth inning against the Phillies

The White Sox kept Meidroth on the active roster for eight days, hoping his thumb would heal. He did appear in an 8-5 loss against the Angels as a defensive replacement in the ninth inning, but did not receive an at-bat. After playing shorthanded for five games, White Sox manager Will Venable told reporters there was an “expiration date” on how long they could carry him on the roster while he recovered. The team finally pulled the trigger and placed him on the IL the following day.

Meidroth has been a streaky hitter this season, hitting .252 with a .684 OPS in 310 at-bats. The rookie has logged 15 RBIs, 11 stolen bases, and three homers across the 84 games he has played.
