White Sox Acquire Outfielder From Blue Jays

-

The White Sox are reportedly acquiring outfielder Will Robertson, who was DFA’d by the Blue Jays over the weekend.

The 27-year-old can play all three outfield positions and is slashing .292/.403/.578 with 14 homers across 62 games in Triple-A Buffalo this season. With the trade deadline approaching, and Austin Slater, Mike Tauchman and Luis Robert Jr. looking like prime trade candidates, the timing of the move makes sense for the White Sox.

The White Sox had an opening on their 40-man roster after designating Vinny Capra for assignment. Outfielder Zach DeLoach was also placed on the full-season injured list Tuesday after appearing in 51 games for Triple-A Charlotte this season. Robertson figures to be a placeholder in Triple-A until after the trade deadline, where he could see a decent runway of playing time.

Robertson only has three games of MLB experience under his belt, after getting promoted by the Blue Jays in June. The left-handed bat was optioned back to Triple-A just over a week later when former White Sox Ryan Burr returned from the 60-day IL.

While Robertson doesn’t have much MLB experience, he has proven he can hit at the minor league level. Since reaching Triple-A, the 2019 fourth-round pick out of Creighton has posted an .825 OPS with 33 home runs and 115 RBIs over 181 games. This season he also owns a 15.5% walk rate.
