The White Sox Can’t Ignore This Pitcher Much Longer

-

The 2024 White Sox were plagued by a ton of problems, most notably the bullpen. They would find themselves in and leading games until the 6th or 7th inning, only to blow the game in the last few innings. That issue forced Chris Getz to address the bullpen in the offseason, as he made significant changes to that group.

As it currently stands, there are six members of the bullpen that weren’t on the team last year, which is a significant overhaul, as there can only be 13 pitchers on a major league roster. That change has equated to the 20th best bullpen ERA according to FanGraphs, which is an improvement from last year.

However, there is a move that could help the bullpen out even more, as a reliever in AAA Charlotte has looked very good to start the season.

That player is Adisyn Coffey, a third round pick of the White Sox back in the 2020 draft. Coffey first made his minor league debut in 2022, pitching to a 5.23 ERA over 32 games with the Kannapolis Cannon Ballers. He was promoted to Winston Salem and Birmingham in 2023, pitching to a combined 4.82 ERA over the two levels.

But, it wasn’t until last year that Coffey took a step forward. Between Birmingham and Charlotte, Coffey was elite in 2024. In 17 innings with the Barons, Coffey had a minuscule .53 ERA. This prompted a promotion to AAA Charlotte, where he was just as good. In 35.1 innings for the Knights, Coffey had a 2.04 ERA with 40 strikeouts.

Coffey has continued his success into the 2025 season, as he has been virtually unhittable. In 14.2 innings so far, Coffey has a 3.68 ERA. However he has struck out 28 batters, which is good for an elite 17.8 K/9. Additionally, hitters are only hitting .196 against him.

The only thing that has hurt Coffey to this point are the walks, as he has a slightly elevated 5.52 BB/9. This is uncharacteristically high for Coffey, so as the season goes on he will likely find the strike zone, which will make him more dominant.

If Penn Murfee continues his 8.71 ERA, I could see them DFA’ing him in favor for Coffey, as he is 26 and ready for the pros. Regardless of whose position he takes, it is time to see Coffey in a White Sox uniform.
