Surprise Contender Emerges For White Sox Trade Chip

-

The MLB trade deadline is just a few days away and the White Sox have been involved in a ton of rumors lately, as they are expected to be very busy.

While they haven’t made any moves during the deadline yet, there will likely be a flurry of moves over the next 48-72 hours, as there will be a good amount of players traded. One of the players that is likely to be traded is outfielder Austin Slater, and there has been some news regarding a potential landing spot for Slater.

According to Buster Olney, the New York Yankees are interested in making a move for Slater, as they now have a need in the outfield with an injury to Aaron Judge.

This is very interesting, as this is the first news we’ve gotten on Slater, despite it being an expectation that he would be traded at the deadline.

The Yankees could line up well in a trade, as they have a decent farm system and want to make some moves at the deadline. Slater could be a nice addition to their lineup, as he is hitting .241 with a .307 OBP and a .747 OPS. He’s added five homeruns and 11 RBIs.

Slater has been a lefty masher, as he has hit .270 with a .352 OBP against lefties this year. He has hit all five of his homeruns against lefties and eight of his RBIs have come against lefties, all while having a very good .908 OPS. This is what will be most attractive to teams at the deadline, as they could use Slater in a platoon.

While Slater won’t fetch the White Sox a top-100 prospect in a trade, he will likely get a prospect from a team’s top-30 list. The Yankees have some intriguing prospects in their system and the White Sox could be interested in a few of them.

Perhaps the White Sox could pry Everson Pereira from Yankees, as he is a former top-100 prospect. He now ranks 15th on the Yankees top-30 according to MLB Pipeline and is still just 24 years old. He also plays in the outfield, a position the White Sox will be interested in adding at the deadline.

While he didn’t fare well in 27 games in the majors in 2023, he only had 93 at-bats. This year in AAA, he is hitting .253 with a .354 OBP. He’s added 19 homeruns and 52 RBIs. This would be a great pickup for the Sox, as he could be the power hitting outfielder they’ve been looking for. While it’s unclear if the Yankees are willing to part with Pereira, the Sox could throw in a reliever to sweeten the deal.

It is good to see the Yankees have interest in Slater, as it is likely he’ll be traded, and the more teams interested the better, as it will allow the Sox to get a better deal.
