Jose Abreu Leaves Sunday’s Game After Being Hit By Pitch

-

Chicago White Sox first baseman and reigning American League MVP Jose Abreu left Sunday’s game against the Mariners after being hit by a pitch in the knee. Abreu was hit in the left knee by a 96-MPH fastball from Mariners pitcher JT Chargois and needed assistance to leave the field as he was unable to put weight on the leg. The injury comes at the worst time for Chicago, given the rash of significant injuries suffered this year.

Abreu’s Potential Injury Comes At The Worst Time For Chicago

Abreu’s injury comes as the White Sox lineup is struggling during a 1-6 record in their last seven games, including getting swept by the Houston Astros last week. Chicago hasn’t just dealt with injuries to several players but severe injuries to several impact players. Eloy Jimenez, Luis Robert, and Adam Engel all have missed most, if not all season, due to significant injuries. The White Sox just a few weeks ago lost their best contact hitter in second baseman, Nick Madrigal, for the remainder of the season after Madrigal suffered a torn hamstring running to first.

If Abreu misses time depending on the severity of the injury, Chicago would likely call up either Gavin Sheets or Jake Burger from Triple-A Charlotte. Both Burger and Sheets have had good seasons in Charlotte this year as the two have combined for 16 home runs. It is unlikely that the White Sox would trade for a replacement first baseman if Abreu misses extended time.

Abreu was replaced by rookie Andrew Vaughn, will likely play the second game of Sunday’s semi-double header along with the first game of the Twins series that starts on Monday. X-rays revealed that the White Sox MVP was negative for a fracture and is deemed day-to-day at the moment. We will provide further updates regarding Abreu’s injury once more news is made available.
