Chicago Blackhawks Well Represented at 2023 Frozen Four with Three Prospects in Spotlight

-

The Blackhawks are well represented at this year’s edition of the Frozen Four.

The semifinals, which are set to take place Thursday at 4 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. CDT, will put three members of Chicago’s prospect pool on display over two games. In the early game, top-seeded Minnesota will take on Boston University. That game will be played by the duo of Blackhawks on the roster of Boston, forward Ryan Greene and goaltender Drew Commesso. Later on the ice at Amalie Arena in Tampa will be a game between third-seed Michigan and second-seed Quinnipiac, where top prospect Frank Nazar will get his chance in the spotlight.

Boston U

The Boston Terriers boast a 29-10 record on the season, going 18-6 in conference play. They earned their automatic bid to the NCAA tournament by beating Merrimack in overtime to claim the Hockey East Championship. They went on to defeat Western Michigan 5-1 and Cornell 2-1 to win the Manchester Region.

Ryan Greene

Ryan Greene was selected with the Blackhawks’ second pick of the second round on the second day of the 2022 NHL Draft. It’s uncertain when the 19-year-old freshman will be ready to join the Blackhawks, but for now, he’s making a big impact for BU. He has 31 points in 37 games, and while he hasn’t really impacted the scoring column in the NCAA tournament, he’s expected to play a big role in the Frozen Four. Greene fits the scheme that GM Kyle Davidson looks for in a center, with great speed and puck handling, and nice passing skills.

Drew Commesso

On the same squad is goaltender Drew Commesso. The 20-year-old has stepped up big-time for his squad in this tournament and boasts a .948 save percentage in the first two games, allowing only two goals in total on 39 shots. The Blackhawks selected him in the second round of the 2020 draft, and he’s likely to get his entry-level contract when his season concludes. He plays aggressively but does a great job owning the crease.

Frank Nazar

Frank Nazar tallied a goal and a helper in the Wolverines’ first game of the tournament, where they beat Colgate 11-1. He wasn’t as productive in a 2-1 overtime win over Penn State, going 5-for-12 on faceoffs and attempting one shot. He made his collegiate debut less than two months ago after recovering from hip surgery, so he’s likely to return to Michigan next year. He’s had solid production in the scoring column with seven points in 12 games, even while still knocking the rust off. Nazar was ranked as one of the Blackhawks’ top prospects coming into this season and also fits the mold of undersized, elite skaters that seem to be favored at center in Chicago.

Adam Fantilli

Blackhawks fans will have their eyes on the Michigan game on Thursday, and not just to cheer on Nazar. The projected number two pick, Adam Fantilli, will be on the ice for the Wolverines. He leads the nation with 64 points this year and should be in the center of the action for Michigan as they fight for a championship.

With the Blackhawks having the rights to multiple prospects in the Frozen Four this year, all of us have something to root for. On top of simply wishing for success for members of the organization, wins for Boston U and Michigan would be nice to see for Chicago, as at this level, every game they can get under their belt is a nice benefit.
