The misconception is that professional athletes aren’t intelligent. That is far from the truth. They can often be some of the smartest people in the room. It is especially true of football players who must retain tons of information thanks to massive playbooks and relentless film study. Travis Kelce is the best tight end in the NFL today and is likely headed to the Hall of Fame after he retires. Part of that is his ridiculous talent, but also his relentless work ethic and sharp intelligence.
One would think Kelce would have no problem playing a fun little memory game. During his podcast New Heights with brother Jason Kelce, they decided to take the picture of all 32 head coaches from the annual owners meetings in Arizona. Travis would go from face to face across the photo and identify every coach by either name or team to see if he could get them all. He started off strong. However, things soon went off the rails when he tried to identify Chicago Bears head coach Matt Eberflus.

One would think he’d have at least a passing memory of Eberflus. The former Indianapolis Colts defensive coordinator gave his Chiefs some headaches during their few encounters between 2018 and 2021. Then again, it’s hard to remember somebody that hasn’t had much success in his current position. It’s why Kelce failed to identify Josh McDaniels as well, despite the man being one of the best offensive coordinators in NFL history. An equally great moment was when Jason called former Green Bay Packers (and current Dallas Cowboys) head coach Mike McCarthy Matt Foley, the iconic SNL character created by Chris Farley.
The truth is Travis Kelce is like most NFL players right now. Most of them probably have no idea who Eberflus is. If the Bears’ head coach wants to change that, he must start winning more games. Players only recognize those who find success. It’s why Andy Reid, Bill Belichick, Sean Payton, and Sean McVay were so easy to identify. Eberflus knew it would be like this in the beginning. You have to learn to walk before you can run. He aims to take a big step forward in 2023.
