WATCH: Justin Fields Plunks Goal Post…From 35 Yards Away

It can be so easy for fans to take for granted how hard it is to play quarterback in the NFL. Nothing should be more appreciated than the ability to throw with accuracy. Justin Fields demonstrated many times at Ohio State that he can hit receivers with amazing touch. That has carried over to the preseason as well. Yet even in the quieter moments of training camp, the rookie has provided glimpses of how pinpoint accurate he can be.

It started with hitting a trash bin from about 20-25 yards away after one practice. Pretty good. Apparently, that wasn’t impressive enough for him though. So during a light session on Monday, August 23rd the young quarterback took things up a notch. It came during a fun little contest between him, Andy Dalton, and Nick Foles. The goal was simple. How many times can you hit the crossbar of the goalposts in a given time limit?

Most of the throws seemed to come from about 15 yards away.

As the score progressed though and remained tight, they decided to up the ante by moving steadily further and further back. At one point it appears they’re 35 yards away from the posts. Did that seem to bother Fields? Not at all. With his usual calm confidence, he banged a throw off that crossbar like it was routine.

Sure, it’s not the same as hitting the guy down the field while running at full speed. Still, one must understand this. Most people can’t hope to get it within five yards of the posts in that situation. Remember the diameter of that crossbar is 6.5 inches. It’s not exactly big. To hit it with such authority from 35 yards away is truly impressive. Another reminder that he isn’t just an athlete who runs fast and can throw the ball a long way. He is a legitimate passer.
