Watch David Montgomery De-cleat Two Redskins With One Block

-

David Montgomery is showing flashes a little more each week of how good a football player he is. His final drive in Washington showcased his running ability, fighting for extra yards and showing patience to seek out the open lane. The problem isn’t with him. It’s with the Chicago Bears not doing more to get him the football. Those issues aside, this hasn’t stopped Montgomery from finding ways to impact the football game.

One of his best highlights of the win in Washington actually came in the 2nd quarter. It wasn’t a run or a catch either. It was a block. An outstanding block. On their third play of the final drive of the first half, the Bears faced 3rd and 8 from their own 39-yard line. Mitch Trubisky was in shotgun. After some adjustment at the line, Montgomery was lined up to his right. At the snap, the Redskins brought a blitz up the middle.

The running back rushed forward and with picture-perfect form, delivered a fierce cut block that not only took out linebacker Cole Holcomb, but also defensive lineman Matt Ioannidis. It was such a good block that both men were taken off their feet, providing Trubisky plenty of time to find Taylor Gabriel on a crossing route for 11 yards and a first down. Chicago would finish the drive with a touchdown.

David Montgomery is the total package for this team

Matt Nagy is a good head coach but his priorities offensively continue to be unbalanced. He’s so focused on getting Trubisky established at times that he doesn’t do enough to utilize a legitimate weapon like Montgomery in his backfield. Thankfully it seems like he’s coming around to that reality little by little. One thing is clear. This kid is not a singular piece in a larger puzzle. He is a complete back who does everything the best ones should.

Run the ball? Check. Catch the ball? Check. Deliver fierce blocks to give his quarterback time? Check that too. It’s proof that GM Ryan Pace had exactly the right idea trading up in the draft to get him. Backs like this aren’t as plentiful as people think. Montgomery has a chance to become special moving forward. It’s a matter of his coaches finding the trust and confidence necessary to get him as involved as possible.
