It seems like Soldier Field had been in the news a lot lately. Everything began months ago when the Chicago Bears shocked everybody by placing a bid to purchase Arlington Racecourse International. A bid they would eventually win. This was the first real indication the team was thinking about moving out of their longtime venue. While many traditionalist fans had trouble understanding why they’d do that, others had no trouble. Former tight end Greg Olsen is among them.

Soldier Field has long been notorious around the NFL among players as being one of the worst playing surfaces in the league. The grass quality is always questionable. Something Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers pointed out prior to the game on Sunday. Then in the 1st quarter of the game, the Bears botched a snap from center. Upon review, it was revealed the ball got caught in the turf.

At that point, Olsen couldn’t resist commenting.

If anything, the man deserves some credit for holding back. He probably could’ve said a lot more but was trying to be a professional. Remember Greg Olsen had to play on that surface for four seasons from 2007 to 2010. He grew to understand how long the grass could get at times and how slippery it would become as the seasons grew colder. As an offensive player, it’s almost impossible to play at your fastest at Soldier Field.

What makes it all the more frustrating is the Bears have no control over this. They don’t own the building. The Chicago Park District does. So why the team catches all the heat for the bad surface quality, the CPD is pocketing a lot of the money the organization brings into it. This is one of many reasons why the Bears have designs on getting a stadium of their own. One where they won’t have to take that abuse any longer.
