VIDEO: Even Allen Robinson Couldn’t Avoid Trashing Matt Nagy

Allen Robinson is not having a good season. This is something he’s not used to. After back-to-back years topping 1,000 yards, he’ll be lucky to reach 600 at his current rate. Despite playing in a 17-game season. So what in the world is going on? A lot of it stems from ongoing issues with rookie quarterback Justin Fields. He’s been struggling due to both individual and outside factors. One problem being a lack of chemistry with Robinson.

Several times it has appeared the two aren’t on the same page. Either it’s Robinson failing to continue running deep when Fields wanted him to, leading to an interception. Or it’s the two failing to connect on a scramble drill against Tampa Bay. Too many times it has been clear the quarterback and receiver aren’t synced up. That is a big problem given how vital Robinson is to this offense.

So what is going on?

The 27-year old receiver was finally asked that question point-blank during his latest news conference. Whether he intended to or not, Robinson’s answer was a clear indictment of head coach Matt Nagy and his handling of the quarterback position this entire offseason. Particularly the decision not to give Fields any meaningful reps with the #1 offense in training camp. The first time they really began working together was Week 2 against Cincinnati.

In other words, Justin Fields and Allen Robinson were months behind schedule in terms of working together. So of course they would look out of sorts at times. They haven’t had a realistic chance to build the necessary timing and rhythm that all QBs and wide receivers need. This entire fiasco could’ve been avoided if Nagy had exercised common sense in giving his prized 1st round rookie some work with 1s in camp. Instead, he was 100% committed to the Andy Dalton scenario, never imagining something might go wrong.

Like, say, an injury? Nagy had no backup plan and now Fields and Robinson are stuck paying the price.
