The Chicago Bears felt they had a potential starter in 2017 when they signed Mike Glennon to a three-year deal worth $45 million. He’d performed well in brief snippets for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as a former 3rd round pick and backup. GM Ryan Pace felt he would make a nice bridge option for Mitch Trubisky. In the end, Glennon lasted all of four games in Chicago before getting benched. One of the ugliest months of quarterbacking this city has seen. Which is saying a lot.
Since then Glennon has gone on to have a journeyman career, backing up in various locations. The most recent being the New York Giants. With Daniel Jones ailing from a neck injury, Glennon has served as the primary starter most of the time since. So it was rather fitting he’d get the nod ahead of the Giants’ visit to Soldier Field. A decision he no doubt regrets right about now as the Bears have already forced not one but two turnovers in his first two drives.
A strip-sack by Trevis Gipson and then an interception by Tashaun Gipson.
Both turnovers led to Bears touchdowns. It was easily the best start this team has had all season. No doubt a venting of frustration by a team that feels they could’ve and should’ve been better in 2021. As for Mike Glennon? It wouldn’t be shocking if he gets benched before the end of the game in favor of Jake Fromm. Giants head coach Joe Judge indicated a rotational system was possible during the week.
This start only adds further incentive to the idea. Not that it’ll probably help much. Fromm might actually be worse than Glennon, which is saying a lot. One person that probably isn’t happy the veteran QB looks so inept is Pace himself. He was the one who handed that money away four years ago. A miscalculation in a long string of them at the quarterback position for the Bears GM.
