Two Teams May Have Already Let Slip Their Interest In Justin Fields

-

It isn’t a secret the Chicago Bears will go one of two directions with Justin Fields this off-season. Either they will stick with him as the starter for another year or trade him to another team, paving the way to take their preferred quarterback at #1 overall. As of now, it feels like the latter is the more likely scenario. Things can change, of course, but the whispers are getting louder. If the Bears elect to trade Fields, how it plays out will depend on how many teams are interested.

While exact information on this subject has not surfaced yet, smoke is already rising. How? Reports from national insiders revealed two teams, the Las Vegas Raiders and New England Patriots, have chosen to interview Luke Getsy for their vacant offensive coordinator job. Now, maybe this is rooted in simple interest for the former Bears coach. However, basic common sense suggests those meetings are far more likely driven by those team’s hopes of getting a good picture of the type of player and person Fields is as a quarterback. Getsy obviously coached him for two years.

Both teams have serious quarterback questions going into 2024.

Why the Raiders would be interested in Justin Fields.

Las Vegas is in a tough spot. Their only viable quarterback options at the moment are Jimmy Garoppolo and Aidan O’Connell. Both were acquired by the previous regime. They also pick 13th in the draft, pushing them well out of range of the top quarterback options in the 1st round. That means they must either try trading up to get one of them or explore the veteran route. No question that a deal for Fields would be far cheaper. He’d have a solid supporting cast in place and a head coach in Antonio Pierce who is familiar with how to handle former 1st round quarterbacks. He was Eli Manning’s teammate in the 2000s.

Why the Patriots would be interested.

Mac Jones fell apart badly over the past two years. Bailey Zappe isn’t going to solve their problem. The Patriots hold the #3 pick, meaning they could end up with one of those top three quarterbacks. Then again, if they’re not wild about that idea, one thing they may consider is trading for Justin Fields and pairing him with Ohio State phenom Marvin Harrison Jr. New head coach Jerod Mayo is already familiar with the Bears quarterback. He watched him rip through the Patriots defense in 2022, leading Chicago to a 33-14 victory. The Patriots’ roster isn’t in the best state right now. Perhaps they’d view Fields as a more reliable option than trying to forge a path with a rookie.

@Martin Melhus – Comment section gold!

Let me summarize the article:
“Perhaps this, and perhaps that.”

This article is full of dreams and fairy dust. Nothing solid here. We’ll try again tomorrow.

@wtfbears watching Jackson struggle against the Chiefs is more of an indication of how good Steve Spagnola is, in manipulating the pressure and disguising defenses from game to game. All good quarterbacks will have bad games. The key issue is to have your players coached up enough, that you can make in-game adjustments that will have some probability of success. Joe Barry was criticized (and then fired) by the Packers (even though he was an old Matt LaFleur friend), for not being aggressive enough in the Packer games. Obviously he dialed up the aggression by collapsing the pocket against the… Read more »

I know this is a different subject but watching Lamar Jackson struggle throwing the ball against the chiefs shows what the bears are up against if Fields doesn’t develop more making reads and progressions.

Trade J Fields for the Raiders #13 and #42 would make sense if in fact the Bears truly want to move on and believe C Williams or D Maye, etc. can become their QB of the future. But anybody who believes NE will trade for J Fields when they have the #3 pick in the 24 Draft is dreaming. Why trade for J Fields when you are guaranteed 1 of the top 3 QBS in this draft? Instead, why not trade for the #1 pick or simply stand pat. 4 out of the first 5 picks are or will be… Read more »
