There are still plenty of Mitch Trubisky critics out there. This is no surprise. His struggles through the first half of 2019 can’t be erased in a matter of a couple of weeks. However, one man who has gotten a chance to watch him lately wasn’t shy about heaping praise on the 25-year old quarterback. After all, if anybody knows a thing or two about how to play the position at a high level, it’s Troy Aikman.
The man captained one of the great dynasties in NFL history, winning three Super Bowls in four years with the Dallas Cowboys in the 1990s. A six-time Pro Bowler, he won Super Bowl MVP honors in 1992 and would enter the Hall of Fame after he retired. After that he became a top analyst for Fox Sports and has called games for years alongside Joe Buck, watching several young quarterbacks begin their ascent to the top of the league.
So when he praises somebody, it means something. After the Chicago Bears knocked off the Dallas Cowboys on Thursday Night Football, he had plenty to say about their young quarterback.
“This is impressive. This is arguably the shining moment of his young career. It’s been fun to watch. And that’s why Matt Nagy was hired, let’s be honest. He was hired to turn him into a franchise quarterback for a team that has invested so much in the quarterback.
Knowing the scrutiny that Mitch Trubisky has been under, I’ve sure enjoyed watching him. He’s just grown right in front of our eyes in the last couple of weeks.”
Troy Aikman can’t be argued with on Trubisky
In truth, it’s hard to argue with anything Aikman said. Trubisky has looked like a completely different quarterback over the past three games. Since the second half of the win over the New York Giants, the quarterback has accounted for nine touchdowns and just four interceptions. He’s been on fire and the win over Dallas was easily his most impressive of the season and the best he’s ever had in a primetime environment.

He now has 16 touchdown passes to eight interceptions with an 86.1 passer rating. A significant improvement from where he was just a few weeks ago. It’s also worth noting that Trubisky now 18-8 since the beginning of 2018. Not a bad record under the circumstances. There is still a long way to go but it certainly looks and feels like the kid may have had the switch turn on for him. Aikman seems to think so and he’s far more qualified than any of us.
