Top NFL Insider Says the Bears Should Have Interest in Tom Brady

-

The Chicago Bears can best be called a wild card going into the 2020 offseason. It’s hard to predict what they plan to do because nobody is entirely sure what their perspective is on the status of the roster. Especially the quarterback position. GM Ryan Pace and head coach Matt Nagy offered vocal support for Mitch Trubisky to remain the starter next season. This despite clear regression from the 25-year old across the board. Meanwhile, the upcoming crop of free agent QBs could include some instant short-term fixes. The ageless Tom Brady among them.

After a disappointing exit in the wild card round, the fate of the New England Patriots icon is up in the air. While retirement is out of the question, he left the door open for possibly playing elsewhere if the Patriots decide they wish to turn the page and go young. This would make Brady a free agent. Even at the age of 42, one could argue he’s still better than half the quarterbacks in the NFL. Trubisky included.

Peter King of NBC Sports, one of the top insiders out there, ran down the list of possible landing spots if Brady did leave. Indianapolis and Las Vegas were two prime locations, but he felt that Chicago could not be ignored either. Provided Pace and Nagy could make the decision to end the Trubisky experiment.

“The Colts, assuming Andrew Luck stays retired, might view Brady as the on-field mentor for Jacoby Brissett for a year or two. Where else? John Elway seems to have his passer of the future in Drew Lock, so Denver’s doubtful, but Elway’s a home-run swinger. Tennessee is doubtful too, after the emergence of Ryan Tannehill, but with Patriot-bred Jon Robinson as GM and Belichick protégé Mike Vrabel as coach, never say never. Chicago should be interested, but two years of Brady would be the end of Mitchell Trubisky, which the brass there seems loathe to do.”

Tom Brady would be an all-in move for the Bears

This would indeed be a drastic change of direction for the Bears. Signing Brady does not mean they plan to have a competition. It sends a loud and clear message. They want to win immediately in 2020 and don’t believe Trubisky is good enough to get them where they want to go. Even in his older state, they think Brady can get them there. It would be a huge shift for Pace who has already sunk so many resources into Trubisky to this point. Doing this would be a clear admission of his failure.

For all the talk the Bears GM does about doing what’s best for the team, it still feels like his vision is clouded to the truth. He remains steadfast in his belief that Trubisky will turn the corner. It is a question of having patience and ensuring the rest of the offense around him is properly solidified. It’s not about ego. It’s worse. Pace seems to genuinely believe this and changing his mind appears out of the question.

Thus the whole Brady discussion seems fruitless.
