This Detroit Lions News Could Benefit The Bears

-

The Chicago Bears will wait to see how things unfold in the first eight picks of the draft before deciding what to do. The prominent rumors surrounding them come from two directions. Either they will take Georgia defensive tackle Jalen Carter at that spot, or they will try to trade down again. Much of that will hinge on what the other teams do. It’s a well-established fact a quarterback is going #1 overall and likely #2 and #4. Things will get interesting around the middle of the top 10 where the Seattle Seahawks (#5) and Detroit Lions (#6) sit.

The Lions are particularly interesting. With a well-rounded roster, they could go in almost any direction. Matt Miller of ESPN did some digging on the subject. From what he understands, Detroit seems to have eyes for Texas Tech edge rusher Tyree Wilson. No doubt they like the idea of pairing him with Aidan Hutchinson, forming a lethal three-man rotation alongside James Houston.

“The Lions selected Aidan Hutchinson at No. 2 overall last year, but that won’t necessarily keep them from selecting another defensive end early in the 2023 draft. I’ve heard they really like Tyree Wilson (Texas Tech) and have a high grade on him. The Lions have spent considerable time and resources meeting with and working out pass-rushers this offseason, and they will be seeking more help on defense right out of the gate in Round 1.”

While that could be bad news for Justin Fields, it may actually benefit the Bears in terms of their overall draft plans.

The Bears want the Detroit Lions to take an edge rusher.

It means a few things. For one, Carter is far more likely to reach the #9 spot if he gets past them. Las Vegas seems focused on getting either a quarterback or a cornerback at #7. Atlanta also seems like an obvious landing spot for a cornerback or another edge rusher like Nolan Smith or Lukas Van Ness. They need both. This would mean the Bears not only have all the offensive linemen on the board at #9 but Carter as well. GM Ryan Poles would have great flexibility. He can either take Carter or move back, knowing there is a reasonable chance he’ll land one of the top offensive tackles.

That would be a great spot to be in. Whether the Detroit Lions cooperate remains to be seen. Their GM is a smart one. He hasn’t made any big mistakes in the 1st round thus far. Penei Sewell and Hutchinson have both become solid contributors for them. Wilson has loads of upside. It’s not hard to see why they like him. If Houston or Arizona don’t grab him in the top five, then Seattle is the only team they have to worry about. Those first six picks are going to be wild.

Keep your eye on the prize. The PRIZE isn’t “winning” the draft, so Detroit drafting another great DE isn’t a win for the bears.(in no way shape or form)

Well, let’s face it… the number 9 pick isn’t like the number 1 pick. It’s dependent on others. Some teams ahead of them have the same needs as the Bears. I think it will be interesting to see what Ryan Poles decides to do with that pick. I think he will trade down because he wants an earlier second round pick to go along with another teams first round pick.

Why would the lion’s take an edge Rusher if it’s not Anderson. They drafted 3 last year.
