Teams The Chicago Bears Should Call About Possibly Trading Down

-

The Chicago Bears remain silent on the free agency front with each passing day. GM Ryan Poles doesn’t seem to be in a rush. Then again, he did make it clear from the start. Free agency is not how he plans to build this team. That will be the draft. There is one problem. Chicago has only six picks, including no 1st rounder. So if he plans to do it this way, he’ll need more. That is why speculation persists that the Bears could maneuver once the action kicks off later this month.

Moving down is never a bad idea, provided a team knows how to do it. The problem is always the same. It takes two teams to make a deal work. Just because the Bears might want to trade down doesn’t mean they’ll have a long line of suitors. Then again, this year could be different in that regard. Several teams are loaded with nine or more picks going into the draft. If they wish, some of them sit in an ideal position to jump up the board in the 2nd round.

Three teams meet what the Chicago Bears likely need

Denver Broncos
  • Round 2: No. 64 (from Rams)
  • Round 3: Nos. 75, 96 (from Rams)
  • Round 4: Nos. 115, 116 (from Seahawks)
  • Round 5: No. 152
  • Round 6: No. 206 (from Bucs through Jets and Eagles)
  • Round 7: No. 232

Pick position plays a big part here. The Broncos don’t go on the clock until the very end of the 2nd round, thanks to their trade for Russell Wilson. There is a strong likelihood that GM George Paton may wish to move higher for a player he covets since the team is clearly in win-now mode. Those two 3rd and two 4th round selections should make going from #64 to either #48 or even #39 viable.

Kansas City Chiefs
  • Round 1: Nos. 29 (from 49ers through Dolphins), 30 overall
  • Round 2: Nos. 50 (from Dolphins), 62
  • Round 3: Nos. 94, 103
  • Round 4: Nos. 121 (from Dolphins), 135
  • Round 7: Nos. 233 (from Vikings), 243 (from Raiders through Patriots), 251, 259

Thanks to their blockbuster deal with Miami involving Tyreek Hill, the Chiefs now have two picks in each of the first three rounds. GM Brett Veach is free to move all over the place if he wants. Since they already have their quarterback in Patrick Mahomes, it is a fair assumption they’re willing to be aggressive. Poles has deep ties to that organization and relationships with everybody in the front office. It wouldn’t be too difficult for some deal to get done.

Philadelphia Eagles
  • Round 1: Nos. 15 (from Dolphins), 18 (from Saints)
  • Round 2: No. 51
  • Round 3: No. 83, 101 (from Saints)
  • Round 4: No. 124
  • Round 5: Nos. 154 (from Commanders), 162, 166 (from Cardinals)
  • Round 6: No. 194 (from Colts)
  • Round 7: No. 237 (from Saints)

No team loves to trade more than the Eagles. They proved it again with their wild blockbuster with New Orleans to secure another 1st rounder in 2023. GM Howie Roseman loves to make deals and has all the flexibility in the world. With six picks between the 3rd and 5th rounds, he has plenty of ammunition to entice the Chicago Bears into a deal for one of their 2nd rounders. Both of which are higher on the board than his 51st overall.
