The trade deadline passed a couple weeks ago, but updates from that day are still emerging. Adam Schefter, an NFL Insider at ESPN, reported on Sunday morning that the San Francisco 49ers checked in on the availability of Bears cornerback Jaylon Johnson. However, a trade didn’t materialize because the Chicago Bears set an asking price that the 49ers deemed too high. Additionally, the 49ers expressed interest in Montez Sweat, who is now with the Chicago Bears, and Pat Surtain II from the Denver Broncos.
“The cost of all three players ultimately turned out to be too high for the 49ers, who thought that they wouldn’t be able to make a deal to improve their team with just hours remaining before the 4 p.m. ET deadline on Oct. 31.”
Chase Young Was Too Risky For Some Teams
Adam Schefter disclosed that the initial asking price for Chase Young decreased due to concerns about his medicals raised by some teams. Initially, the Washington Commanders sought a 2nd and 5th round pick in exchange for Young. The Chicago Bears were likely one of the teams with medical concerns but opted to pursue Montez Sweat instead. This decision appears to be proving beneficial for the Bears as Sweat recorded a team high 8 pressures vs the Carolina Panthers on Thursday night.
Jaylon Johnson Is Having A Career Season
Jaylon Johnson ranks as the 10th highest-graded cornerback in the NFL, according to Pro Football Focus, with an overall grade of 82. His coverage grade is 83.7, placing him 9th in the league. He has made 11 defensive stops, forced 1 fumble, and secured 2 interceptions and 2 pass breakups this season. At 24.5 years old, Johnson is seeking a new contract and rightfully so. With the recent signing of Montez Sweat, the Bears have the option to now use the franchise tag or transition tag next summer on Johnson if it comes to that
It remains to be seen whether the Bears will negotiate a deal with Johnson before next season, but he seems to have at least earned one.
