Mitch Trubisky deserves loads of credit. He easily could’ve folded his tent back in September. The Chicago Bears handed him the starting job after a tough competition with Nick Foles. Then less than three games into the regular season, he gets benched for Nick Foles. Other quarterbacks would’ve gotten frustrated and just accepted their exit was inevitable. Trubisky didn’t. He kept working hard and more importantly did a self-examination of what needed to change if he got another chance.

Clearly, that time was spent wisely. Since returning after the bye week, Trubisky is 3-2 as the starter (6-2 overall) with 10 TD passes, four interceptions, and a 99.3 passer rating. One thing that has stood out the most is his presence. Among the first things he did when resuming the starting role was becoming more vocal with the coaches. He grew more assertive in how he wanted the offense to function. More running the ball, more play action, and more bootlegs.

The coaches complied with his wishes and the results speak for themselves.

Chicago hasn’t scored less than 25 points in a game since Trubisky returned. One of the best sustained offensive runs the Bears have had in many years. It’s led to widespread speculation about whether the quarterback has truly turned a corner. Several executives around the NFL already think the team must consider bringing the 26-year old back in 2021.

One person who is buying into this “new and improved” Trubisky? That is Steve Young. The Hall of Fame quarterback was one of the few people who voiced disagreement with the Bears’ decision to bench him back in September. He felt it was too soon. They should’ve given Trubisky more time to get settled in what with the pandemic-shortened offseason.

These past few weeks have shown why. To Young, it’s clear the quarterback has turned a corner. He’s figured some things out. He isn’t in his own head anymore. Because of that, he feels Trubisky is on track to be better than ever.

Mitch Trubisky has a chance to change his narrative

While some people are happy to jump back on the Trubisky bandwagon, plenty aren’t so easily swayed. His “resurgence” over the past month has gotten a lot of help in the form of an easy schedule. One that included the three worst defenses in the NFL in Houston, Detroit, and Jacksonville. During that time Trubisky has continued to make some ugly mistakes with the football.

His backbreaking strip-sack against the Lions. His brutal end zone interception in Minnesota and another against the Jaguars. While he has improved to be sure, the bad decision-maker still shows up from time to time. If he’s doing this against cupcake competition, what will happen when he finally runs into a good defense.

People are about to find out on Sunday.

The Green Bay Packers have had the number of Mitch Trubisky since he was drafted. He’s only beaten them once in his career. Their defense is playing good football lately and intercepted him twice in the first meeting a month ago. The Bears have to win this game to make the playoffs. If Trubisky can deliver that, it could finally be that watershed moment people have waited for.
