A lot of fans rolled their eyes a week ago when Cordarrelle Patterson said Mitch Trubisky looked like “a whole new player.” That he had a fire in his eyes like never before and it was showing on the field. That was probably just a receiver sticking up for a teammate and a guy he likes. They can’t be his actual feelings on the matter.

Then the Chicago Bears named Trubisky the starter.

Suddenly people were perplexed. There’s no way the 26-year old could’ve looked that much better after a single offseason. Especially with no minicamps or OTAs to aide him. Yet that is basically what head coach Matt Nagy said. The competition with Nick Foles was close, but Trubisky won the job. Fair and square.

Judging by the comments made by other teammates on Tuesday? This wasn’t a surprising choice.

Anthony Miller echoed what Patterson said. That Trubisky showed something this past month they hadn’t seen in him before.

Last but not least was Bobby Massie. While the big right tackle said the Bears would’ve played hard for either quarterback, he made it clear that Trubisky 100% earned the job in training camp.

Mitch Trubisky still has the support of the locker room

The fact that offensive teammates remain firmly behind Trubisky is a good thing. It means the guy hasn’t lost the respect of the locker room. Obviously his play on the field has to improve but they recognize he’s doing anything and everything in his power to get better. One thing about NFL players is they always respect guys who try. It would be a much greater concern if there were rumblings that players weren’t happy about the decision.

This is confirmation that they will play hard for him and maybe, just maybe he really has improved. Evidence of that won’t arrive until this coming Sunday when the Bears head up to Detroit. Most people aren’t giving Chicago a chance to have much success in 2020. Most of that due to their questions at quarterback. This isn’t going to change until Trubisky steps up or Nick Foles replaces him.
