The Chicago Bears running back room is about as muddy as it gets in the NFL. There truly is no clear workhorse/starter. This is great for competition and depth but terrible for anyone who plays fantasy football. However, that could all change very soon. One Bears scout believes that rookie Roschon Johnson could be the guy who separates himself from the group. He had this to say to Josh Schrock of NBC Sports.
“He’s someone we really feel compelled can become a pillar of this organization for a really long time.. I feel really strongly about this guy. I’m excited for you guys to meet him. There’s a level of it factor to this kid the second he walks into the room that all you guys are going to feel.”
As of right now, the Bears running back room consists of Khalil Herbert, D’Onta Foreman, Roschon Johnson, Trestan Ebner, and Travis Homer. One would think the slight edge would go to Herbert but with his woes in pass protection, the spot is truly up for grabs. Foreman is my dark-horse given his steady production and veteran presence. But Johnson, the fourth-round pick from Texas, definitely has the tools to dethrone either of those two.
Training Camp Will Be A Battle
Bears training camp is 9 days away. We are almost there. The pads will go on and the battle for roster spots and the depth chart will begin. The wide receiver position will be one to keep an eye on, especially regarding the openings after DJ Moore, Darnell Mooney, and Chase Claypool. But the running back room is where it will be most competitive. I believe pre-season will help solidify who starts for this team week 1 vs Green Bay. But if no one out of bunch can really pull away, we might be looking at more of a running back by committee.
Just for fun, here is how I think things will shake up to start the season.

- D’Onta Foreman
- Khalil Herbert
- Roschon Johnson
I truly like Herbert but I can’t help but think Foreman was brought in for a reason. He rushed for over 900+ yards in 2022 and was more efficient and productive than former Bears running back David Montgomery. It will take a phenomenal training camp and pre-season for Johnson to even have a shot at headlining this group. But if anyone can do it, it’s him. Camp can’t get here fast enough.
