Saints’ Eli Apple Mocked Tarik Cohen and Promptly Got Injured

-

Here’s the thing about football. It’s a brutal game, but it’s also a fair one. There is a reason players are not so quick to tempt fate with their actions. Superstition is a big thing in the NFL. Apparently somebody forgot to tell that to Eli Apple. The New Orleans Saints cornerback was feeling pretty good towards the end of the game on Sunday at Soldier Field. The Chicago Bears were being obliterated 36-10 and trying to get back in the game late. Tarik Cohen attempted to make a play on 1st down. Frustration was clearly mounting.

So Apple decided to rub it in a little deeper by motioning his hand over Cohen’s head as he walked back to the huddle. A clear jab at running back’s long noted lack of height (5’6). The corner certainly seemed to get a kick out of it as did many on the internet who saw the play.

What Apple forgot is that karma has a way of balancing itself out. Sometimes even faster than one might believe. Barely a few plays later while trying to prevent the Bears from scoring a touchdown, the cornerback went down in the end zone holding his knee and in clear pain. While an unfortunate play for a young player who was finally realizing some of his potential, it was a fitting karmic moment as well.

Cohen himself shrugged the issue off after the game. He understands trash talking is a fact of life in the NFL and it’s not like he’s unaware of the fact he is short. At the same time, the Saints learned a valuable lesson. Take the win graciously and go home. Don’t belittle people in the midst of a game just because you can.
