One of the biggest surprises of the first round in the 2025 NFL Draft came when the Chicago Bears used the 10th overall pick to select tight end Colston Loveland. While Loveland was considered TE1 on some expert draft boards, many in the media expected the Bears to target Penn State’s Tyler Warren, a popular pick in countless mock drafts.
Ryan Poles Explains the Decision
Following the selection, Bears general manager Ryan Poles addressed the media late Thursday night. Among the many questions he received, one stood out: Why Loveland over Warren? Poles acknowledged there were “a lot of conversations back and forth” internally about the two prospects. However, he ultimately felt that Loveland “fits what we want to do a little better.”

Senior Director of Player Personnel Jeff King echoed that sentiment, calling Loveland “the best fit for us.” King also praised Tyler Warren, showing the team’s respect for both players, but made it clear Loveland was their guy all along.
Loveland Was Their Top Choice
It’s becoming apparent that the Bears had Loveland ranked higher on their board from the beginning. He seems to fit seamlessly into the team’s long-term vision and alongside Bears TE Cole Kmet. Chicago is not alone in its evaluation either—several draft analysts and media members have since come out in support of the Loveland pick, stating they also had him graded above Warren and was the better fit for Chicago.
Nick Saban on the Bears drafting Colston Loveland:
“Another one of the recruits that we lost. He beat us in the playoffs. This guy is a fantastic athlete.. He's the best receiver of all the tight ends in the draft."https://t.co/ULk82vslxM

A Bold Move with Some Risk
While the selection may have caught some fans and analysts off guard, it’s clear the Bears made this decision with confidence. Only time will tell if Loveland lives up to his draft status, but for now, the Bears believe they’ve found the perfect tight end to help elevate their offense.

Here’s something you already know (and a sentiment that I try to respect).
“The greatest general manager in sports history goes by the last name of Hindsight.” — Bill Huber
It is possible that you have not noticed I try to limit my whining to coetaneous tranactions, and experiences in which Ryan Poles as GM, is the accountable individual.
That’s fair — isn’t it?
@TGena: You conveniently left off some players from that list. Kyler Gordon, Jaquan Brisker (if healthy, an excellent pick, but not always healthy), Braxton Jones (a phenomenal value for a 5th round pick), Gervon Dexter Sr., Tyrique Stevenson. Yes, there have been some misses, but every GM has some misses, even your GM crush Howie Roseman (Jaelon Raegor, anyone? Dude’s name makes him sound like a ‘Game of Thrones’ character, not a NFL WR.). Further, 6th and 7th round picks seldom have long careers, and even more rarely become starters, something like 2% of 6th and 7th rounders become long… Read more »
@Sam, fit, as teams see it, is exactly what separates players for different teams. In this case, they said they thought both TE’s were very good but the fit is they think Loveland does the things they want to do better in their view. He’s a better route runner and a wider catch radius. He’s a,so a better in line blocker (ie lined up nest to tackle). His age helps the fit. @TGana, you’re so right. This is where Poles has tried being the smartest guy in the room. Examples are various in the 3 previous drafts from Velus to… Read more »
