The Chicago Bears offense has been difficult to digest for fans through the first three weeks. After so many years of being starved of even decent quarterback play, watching Justin Fields look painfully helpless is hard for them. Most fans would be thrilled with a 2-1 record. Not Bears fans. That is because they’ve seen this before. Winning in today’s NFL can’t be sustained without a quarterback. Unless Fields starts to improve, they must come to grips with the fact they’re still stuck in QB hell. However, not everybody is dissatisfied with the offense. Robert Quinn is one of them.
For all the struggles the passing game is going through, the Bears rank 2nd in the NFL in rushing. They have 394 on the ground over the past two weeks. That is only with their running backs. Green Bay and Houston both had few answers for the power football they’ve been playing. The offensive line is bullying guys up front. David Montgomery and Khalil Herbert have been taking advantage. Quinn had another description of it.
“Boss ball.”
Robert Quinn is grateful for what the offense can do.
Sure, he’d like it if they scored more points. Still, a defender’s job is hard enough in the modern NFL. Having to play extended minutes makes it ten times worse. Running the ball allows the Bears to control the time of possession and wear the other team down. Then they can pounce in the 4th quarter with some big plays. Does Roquan Smith make that outstanding interception with under two minutes to go if the offense hadn’t run it so effectively to keep him fresh? Probably not.
It’s complimentary football. This is the next best approach to winning football games when a team doesn’t have an effective quarterback. Until the Bears figure out what to do with Fields, they will keep pounding the rock. Robert Quinn should benefit from that, given his advancing age at 32. Maybe this approach is the best way to ease the pressure on Fields. Once he feels it’s not all on him to win, he’ll stop thinking so much.
