The Chicago Bears draft Kerrith Whyte out of Florida Atlantic with their first pick of the 7th round in the 2019 draft. Most people haven’t heard about him because he was the wingman to the much more celebrated Devin Singletary. However, there is a quiet buzz in the scouting and coaching community that his upside may be higher.
One running backs coach from the AFC told NFL.com as much.
“Singletary gets all the attention, but Whyte is the more explosive of the two and he might end up surprising people.”
The odds of Whyte seeing the field on offense at this point seem remote. The Bears already have David Montgomery, Mike Davis, and Tarik Cohen. However, he may see some kind of role in the return game thanks to his experience there coupled with good speed and toughness to shake tacklers.
Chicago Bears draft Kerrith Whyte to add more speed on offense and special teams
Don’t let anybody fool you. There’s no such thing as too much speed in the NFL. The Bears got more of it last year but they still didn’t have quite enough. That’s about to change in a big way. Already they added Cordarrelle Patterson to the return game this offseason. Now Whyte gets to join the fray. Never mind his underrated value as a running back.

While his vision isn’t always the best, if an offensive line gives him a crease, he is a threat to house it almost every time he touches the ball. He has that kind of acceleration and elusiveness. It’s hard to tell if he has a big future on offense, but there is no doubt this is another chess piece for head coach Matt Nagy to play around with. That’s never a bad thing.
