The first big move of the Chicago Bears’ 2022 offseason came when they signed defensive tackle Larry Ogunjobi to a three-year deal. It was felt to be a strong move at the time. He was somebody that could fill the needed three-technique position as an interior pass rusher. There was one lingering concern though. How healthy was he after suffering a season-ending foot injury in January. As it turns out, not healthy enough.
Ogunjobi has reportedly failed his team physical. This forces the Bears to rescind the contract offer, making the defensive tackle a free agent once again. It is an unfortunate turn of events for the player. He’s been chasing a major contract for years and this was supposed to be his big moment. As for the Bears, their roster rebuild has already hit an unforeseen snag. GM Ryan Poles will have to pivot to Plan B.
The NFL never lacks for drama.
The Bears are not signing DT Larry Ogunjobi because of a failed physical.

Bears GM Ryan Poles: "Larry Ogunjobi embodies everything we are looking for in a Bear. He is a special person and player… [but] our medical team deemed him to have failed his physical and therefore, unfortunately, we are not signing him today." https://t.co/MijPNZ91rM

Poles said a couple of weeks ago that any move the Bears make was going to be dictated by strict medical evaluations. While he was talking about draft picks at the time, it’s clear he meant for any player they acquired. He wasn’t lying. Ogunjobi figured to be a nice addition to their defense but failed physical was too much of a red flag to ignore. Poles would rather look somewhere else for solutions than sink $13.5 million per year into what could be damaged goods.
It is frustrating, but also a sound approach. Larry Ogunjobi is a good player but not a special one. The Bears must be smart with their money. If they aren’t sure about his long-term prospects, then move on. This upcoming 2022 draft class has a number of interior pass rusher options available. They could also look into signing somebody else like Jarran Reed from Kansas City. He can fit that role and he has ties to Poles.
