The last thing the Chicago Bears needed was to take a tough blow to their defense with Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers waiting this weekend. Sadly, this team has a difficult time with good fortune of late. After some tough bounces on Sunday against Green Bay, the team found out that pass rusher Robert Quinn has contracted COVID-19. This landed him on the Reserve/COVID list on Tuesday.

The team already lost running back Damien Williams to the ailment last week along with wide receivers coach Mike Furrey. This is the third case and easily the biggest. Quinn has 5.5 sacks so far this season. He’s been one of their best players on defense. Losing him on right before taking on perhaps the hottest quarterback in the NFL is far from ideal. Perhaps he still has a chance to return if he can test negative twice in the coming days.

What makes this hurt even more is the other losses already suffered.

The Chicago Bears likely won’t have defensive end Akiem Hicks in this game after he seemed to re-aggravate his groin injury against Green Bay. Also, don’t forget they lost backup linebacker Jeremiah Attaochu for the season to a torn pectoral. Now with Quinn going down? The pass rush is getting dangerously thin. Khalil Mack and Trevis Gipson will likely be the two starters on Sunday.

There is no getting around it. This is a devastating loss for the Bears. Their defense has carried them through this tough part of the schedule thus far. Now it’s losing key guys at the worst possible time. Considering their offense still can’t score points with any degree of consistency? It’s hard to imagine they have any sort of chance to upset the defending champions on Sunday. Just a really unfortunate turn of events for a player who was having arguably his best season in years.
