Recent Injury Could Put Chicago Bears In A Bad Spot

-

The Chicago Bears are dealing with injuries in training camp. This is hardly a surprise. It is a typical issue all teams deal with. The only thing to do is hope they aren’t serious. Thus far the team has managed to avoid any major losses to their star players though Allen Robinson and Akiem Hicks have sat out with minor issues. However, there is one player who recently went down that is a major concern.

That was Jason Spriggs. The Bears signed the former Packers 2nd round pick in free agency. He was immediately penciled in as the swing tackle and primary backup to both Charles Leno Jr. and Bobby Massie. A knee injury knocked him out of practice a couple of days ago and he’s yet to return. The team hasn’t even offered an update, which could be a bad thing.

Not just for him but for the offense. If Spriggs is out for any significant time, it threatens to expose a thin area of their depth chart. Without him in the picture, only undrafted free agent Badara Traore remains. That is unless they tried shifting Alex Bars or Lachavious Simmons to tackle. Neither of which could be considered an ideal option.

Chicago Bears still have options if they need help

The good news, at least for now is that options exist for them if he is down for awhile. Veteran Cordy Glenn remains a free agent. He is by far the best available. Somebody who can start right away if needed. The problem is he might not be interested in a backup spot. Jared Veldheer has struggled with health setbacks in recent years but he’s started 113 games in his career. That sort of experience could be valuable in a pinch.

LaAdrian Waddle is also available. Though a backup for most of his career, he’s been solid whenever asked to step in. He was part of both the 2016 and 2018 New England Patriots championship teams. So he has seen the mountaintop. Unfortunately last season ended in training camp with a torn quad for him. He should be ready to go by now.

Will the Bears make a move? The longer Spriggs is out, the more urgent they should be.
