The buzzword of the offseason for the Chicago Bears is “competition.” GM Ryan Pace and head coach Matt Nagy both have set the tone with that message since 2019 ended. Their mission was to create as much of it across the roster as possible. For the most part, they’ve done that. Nick Foles arrived to challenge Mitch Trubisky at QB. Jaylon Johnson and Tre Roberson join a thick battle at cornerback. Ted Ginn Jr. and Darnell Mooney add more juice to the battle royale at wide receiver.
All of it is definitely good for the team. However, one could argue the Bears didn’t try hard enough to rock the depth chart in certain areas. A big one being the offensive line. Their biggest acquisitions were former high draft picks like Germain Ifedi and Jason Spriggs. Both on minimum deals. They’re joined by 7th round rookies Arlington Hambright and Lachavious Simmons. Not exactly a group that should make guys like Charles Leno, Bobby Massie and even James Daniels or Cody Whitehair a little nervous.
Obviously contract status has something to do with that. Still, an opportunity remains out there for the Bears. Somebody they can likely get cheap who would be a definite threat for a starting tackle job.
Chicago Bears should give Cordy Glenn a chance
Cordy Glenn is somewhat of a forgotten name these days. That’s a shame because not too long ago he was probably one of the 6-7 best left tackles in the NFL. Unfortunately, some health setbacks along with disagreements with his former team the Cincinnati Bengals led to a falling out. He’s 30-years old and by all accounts healthy. Yet he remains unsigned by any team up to this point.

This creates an opportunity for the Bears. They don’t have a lot of cap space to spend. However, at this point in the offseason, it’s unlikely Glenn will get anything but a cheaper one-year deal. Especially given the injury history. There is no harm in taking that flier on him. When on the field he’s continued to show flashes of dominance both in the run game and as a pass blocker.
If other established starters have to fear for their jobs, it should be no different for Leno and Massie. Also, don’t forget Glenn has ties to this coaching staff. Offensive coordinator Bill Lazor worked with him for two years in Cincinnati. That familiarity would make such a move an easier sell.
