The Chicago Bears are far from a finished product. They’re a team that’s undergone an extensive rebuild for the past four offseasons during which their entire roster and coaching staff was overturned. Teams don’t learn how to win quickly during such periods. GM Ryan Pace has preached patience and thus far fans have gone along with it.
This 2018 season feels like the first time where the team has some brighter prospects. Are the playoffs a possibility? It’s hard to see that happening. There are a number of reasons why. So which is the one that could end up holding them back the most? Some might think it’s the pass rush situation. Hence the repeated calls for the Bears to make a strong push to trade for Khalil Mack.
However, at least one NFL executive thinks different. Mike Sando of ESPN polled various front office people around the league asking what the biggest weaknesses are for every NFL team. The choice for the Bears had less to do with personnel and more to do with general experience.
“The worry: Being unproven and unestablished at two of the most important spots in any NFL organization.
Exec unfiltered: “Their inexperience worries me — the head coach, some of the offensive staff, the quarterback. That is the biggest question, whether they can get it done in crunch time, trying to make plays against Detroit, Green Bay and Minnesota. Chicago is just the most inexperienced group in the division at some of those key spots.”

One has to think about the NFC North as sort of a wild west town with the quarterbacks and coaches being the quick-draw gunfighters. Only the strong survive. This is why Aaron Rodgers and Mike McCarthy have reigned supreme for years. They’re challenged now by Matthew Stafford and Jim Bob Cooter who’ve been together since 2015 and are in total sync.

Last but not least is new arrive Kirk Cousins in Minnesota, a former Pro Bowler, who has John DeFilippo as his offensive coordinator. DeFilippo was quarterbacks coach for the world champion Eagles last year. So in this context, the exec has a point. Matt Nagy is the least proven offensive coach in the division and Mitch Trubisky is the least proven quarterback.
Throw in the Bears’ recent history of losing and it’s little wonder people are having trouble buying in. That won’t happen until those two start to change minds on the field.
