New Team Might Be Going After Justin Fields From Out Of Nowhere

-

One thing to remember about the NFL is there is no predicting it. Things might make sense from several perspectives, but something unexpected comes out of left field. That is always the case when quarterbacks are involved. Everybody knows by now that the Chicago Bears will likely trade Justin Fields at some point in the near future. He still has plenty of value and upside. There is no shortage of teams who need a quarterback. It shouldn’t be hard to find one willing to pay a price GM Ryan Poles wants.

Multiple teams appear poised to explore Fields. Probably the two most prominent are the Atlanta Falcons and Las Vegas Raiders. Both sit outside the range to get someone in the draft and may not be prime destinations for top free agents. However, there might be a sleeper lurking in the shadows. Robert Randolph is a musician responsible for the new introductory theme song to Thursday Night Football on Amazon Prime. He also has deep ties to the New York area. That is what made his recent statements so interesting.

Justin Fields to the Giants sounds perplexing at first.

They hold the #6 overall pick and still have Daniel Jones under contract. One would think they’d either choose to stick with him or try getting somebody in the draft. However, it isn’t entirely outlandish. New York may wish to hedge their bets. That means giving Jones one more year to finally evolve as a passer while acquiring Fields as a sort of insurance policy. It would enable them to use the #6 pick on another position of need such as wide receiver or the offensive line. The obvious question is whether New York is willing to pay a high enough price. Teams don’t typically give up 2nd round picks for backup quarterbacks.

Then again, the Giants are in a tough spot. Jones is coming off a torn ACL. There is no telling what he’ll look like when he returns. Head coach Brian Daboll has experience working with big athletic quarterbacks like Justin Fields. He helped turn Josh Allen into a start for Buffalo. It isn’t hard to imagine he’d believe he can do the same for Fields. Besides, he’s worked with former Bears quarterbacks before. Ask Mitch Trubisky. This possibility is unlikely, but it is at least worth monitoring.
