Mitch Trubisky has had four years. He’s had so many chances in 2020 alone to rewrite the script on his career. For a brief moment, he seemed to come close. After being benched in September against Atlanta, he rose from the dead after the bye week. With some of his most efficient play of the year, he led the Chicago Bears to three-straight wins to reach 8-8 and make the playoffs. Yet some were reluctant to call it a career resurgence. Partly because it came against three of the worst defenses in the NFL.

Sure enough, those people were wise. Trubisky had his big chance to really change some minds in the season finale against the Green Bay Packers. A win gets the Bears to 9-7 and robs Green Bay of the #1 seed. Instead, he finished with 252 yards and an interception. Not to mention two other passes that should’ve been intercepted. It would’ve hurt if it weren’t at all surprising.

Yet people continued to hope. The playoffs were coming.

Trubisky was the first Bears QB to ever throw for 300 yards in a playoff game. This big moment would bring the best out of him, right? People should know better by now. Confronted with a big moment and a good defense, the 26-year old was MIA. People will look at the 21-9 score and think the Bears defense had an average day. That couldn’t be further from the truth. They held one of the best offenses in the NFL to just seven points in the first half.

All while missing three of their best players in Roquan Smith, Jaylon Johnson, and Eddie Goldman. Their reward? A grand total of three points from the offense until the final two minutes of the game. Their quarterback who is supposedly on a career resurgence finished with 199 yards, 1 TD, and 0 interceptions. That is the epitome of pathetic. One last reminder of how badly GM Ryan Pace screwed that draft pick up.

Mitch Trubisky excuses can finally end

The fact is he’s not a good quarterback. He can do just find against bad defenses but every time he’s been confronted by one that is talented and/or well-coached? He can’t do anything. He refuses to attack down the field and even when he decides to try, it usually gets intercepted. The kid is a talented athlete but his mental acuity for the position is lacking. He just doesn’t have the processing power to be an NFL starter.

Head coach Matt Nagy for his part hasn’t done much to help him. His offensive schemes have no rhyme or reason to them. His play-calling was bad and his personnel management even worse. Nothing makes sense with what he tries to do. He can’t seem to accentuate the positives of his players while hiding the negatives.

To say nothing of the constant lack of discipline they show.

Mitch Trubisky had every opportunity he could’ve asked for. Probably more than he should’ve. It’s over. The experiment was a failure. It’s time to move on and try again. Continuing down this path is only going to lead to more pain and heartbreak for fans. Let him go find a new home.
