Mitch Trubisky hasn’t appeared in front of the media since the end of last season. So he hasn’t been able to offer his own insight on all the craziness that happened over the past few months. Sure the COVID-19 stuff and the George Floyd killing. However, it was obvious where the Chicago Bears media were going to start when he finally had his first virtual press conference of the year.

What were his thoughts about the Bears trading for Nick Foles?

Everybody knows the story by this point. Trubisky regressed in 2019 after a promising 2018. Concerned that he might’ve already peaked, the Bears decided to send a 4th round pick to Jacksonville for the ex-Super Bowl MVP. One who has a ton of connections to the current coaching staff including Matt Nagy. Being the competitor he is, Trubisky admits he wasn’t thrilled about it.

At the same time, he also understood.

Mitch Trubisky at least understands where he’s at

To be clear, the quarterback doesn’t blame the Bears for the decision. It sounds more like he blamed himself. He knew he didn’t play up to the team’s or his own standards last year. That is why he said he wasn’t shocked when they decided not to pick up his 5th-year option. He hadn’t earned it. The NFL is a business and that was purely a business decision.

His job isn’t to dwell on that stuff. It’s to prepare for the battle to come as hard as humanly possible. Trubisky seems to like his chances. With no offseason workouts prior to training camp and a shortened preseason, he feels his prior knowledge of the system and connections to the current receivers gives him an edge over Foles. Something he is striving hard to exploit.

It is exactly the sort of reaction the team was hoping for. Being pissed off is a good thing, provided he channels that anger towards being better on the field.
