The subject of the Chicago Bears head coaching job will remain a hot topic until January. Everybody believes there is a reasonable likelihood Matt Eberflus will get fired. While it’s only been two seasons at the helm, they’ve been tumultuous ones, to say the least. He endured the longest losing streak in franchise history. His handpicked coordinators have both been disasters. Worst of all, he has developed a reputation as a choker, with three 4th quarter collapses in two months. It is why discussions among fans have already shifted to possible replacements. Among the hottest names, once again, is Jim Harbaugh.
It feels like the former Bears quarterback has been connected to the job for the past five years. He was heavily discussed by the media both in 2018 and 2022. Both times, the organization didn’t even bring him in for an interview. Could 2024 finally be his year? Michigan insider John U. Bacon spoke on Ermanni & Edwards about the situation. Three teams feel like potential landing spots from what he’s gathered. The Chargers and Raiders are two, and the Bears are the other.
Seems the Jim Harbaugh hopes are fading.
Bacon is now the third prominent insider who has mentioned Warren as a potential obstacle to a Harbaugh hiring. Albert Breer and Jordan Schultz are two others. It sounds like there is lingering bad blood between the two, stemming from contentious discussions during the COVID-19 pandemic. Harbaugh has a long history of butting heads with authority figures. It feels unlikely he would play nice with Warren and GM Ryan Poles. This is especially true after the ugly way his tenure in San Francisco ended eight years ago.

Things do change. There is always a chance Jim Harbaugh is willing to play nice. Maybe he and Warren can squash their beef. Then again, the head coach has an ego. His success over the years will command a certain level of concessions. It doesn’t feel like Chicago is in a position to give him that. While they’d love to hire a coach with a proven track record of winning, they won’t simply hand the keys to the kingdom over to him. It sounds like the Bears are prepared to look elsewhere for their solution.
