Jaquan Brisker was one of the first prospects drafted during the Matt Eberflus era. The head coach was a huge part of the Chicago Bears bringing the Penn State product in, hoping he would become a fixture in the defensive secondary. Things got off to a great start in 2022. He finished second on the team in tackles (104), first in sacks (4), and had one of the best interceptions in recent memory against the Patriots. Everybody could sense the Bears got themselves a potential star in the making.
Brisker has picked up right where he left off. The first day of pads took place on Tuesday, August 1st, for the Bears. The safety celebrated the occasion with another ridiculous interception. Eberflus sang his praises again after practice. He is clearly happy with the progress Brisker has made. In fact, it turns out the head coach already has a nickname for his young safety. It was revealed when Eberflus was mic’d up for practice. As he went over to greet Brisker, he said it aloud.
“Mako shark.”
Why? His explanation was perfect.

Matt Eberflus knew precisely what he was doing.
Few things motivate players better than earning a nickname from the head coach. Eberflus is correct. The mako shark is the fastest in the ocean, clocking speeds up to 46 mph. That isn’t all. They’re also considered one of the smartest of their species, known for their rapid ability to learn. Lastly, they have a reputation for being aggressive hunters. That couldn’t sum up Brisker better if you tried. He’s fast, aggressive, and intelligent. There are times he looks like a shark out there. The nickname is excellent.
Whether it sticks remains to be seen. Players sometimes prefer nicknaming each other. Still, Matt Eberflus would be wise to keep that one alive. It’s unique and fitting. Brisker should continue living up to it this season. This isn’t an isolated case too. Eberflus also was the one who gave Kyler Gordon the nickname “Spider-Man.” The cornerback has fully embraced it since then. It seems like a sign that a nickname will soon follow if you earn the coach’s approval. It will be fun to see who is next.
