Matt Eberflus Might Be Planning A Heist From Green Bay

-

Matt Eberflus has yet to meet with the Chicago media despite being named the head coach. That is likely because the man is hard at work lining up assistants for his coaching staff. Already it’s been confirmed he’ll bring linebackers coach Dave Borgonzi with him from Indianapolis. A strong start to be sure. Yet people are dying to know what he has planned for the most important jobs. The coordinators.

Rumors are he has eyes on Rich Bisacchia for special teams. Somebody who is widely respected around the league. Especially after the miracle he pulled in Las Vegas after Jon Gruden resigned. It is the offense though everybody is waiting on. According to Albert Breer of the MMQB, one big name to watch is Green Bay Packers passing game coordinator Luke Getsy. Someone the Bears head coach seems to have a relationship with.

This is a fascinating development.

Getsy is considered one of the brighter young minds in the NFL. Somebody with a wide range of experience in different offensive systems. Most recently the successful Shanahan style under Matt Lafleur. He also has coordinating experience himself from two stints at the college level for Indiana University of Pennsylvania and then at Mississippi State. While both stints were brief, he did have some success.

Aaron Rodgers has experienced one of the best passing stretches of his career since Getsy arrived to take over as quarterbacks coach, which is saying something. He has also played a central role in developing some of Green Bay’s best wide receivers including Jordy Nelson and Davante Adams. It feels like he is somebody that is prepared to take over an NFL offense. Just look at this unprompted comment from Adams about him.

“One of the unsung heroes is Coach Getsy,” Adams said of his wide receivers coach in the first two years his career took off after struggling in 2014 and ’15. “Luke Getsy is a coach who I really really enjoyed having. … I had a lot of respect for Gets and what he did with us because he played quarterback, so the way he dove into the wideout position as far as the particulars, that helped open up my eyes even more so than what I learned from (Williams) before that.”

Matt Eberflus is known as somebody who takes teaching quite seriously as a coach. The same is said about Getsy. So it isn’t a surprise the two would connect. This would be an inspired choice for the next Bears offensive coordinator. Weakening Green Bay in the process would be a bonus.
