Luke Getsy Had A Valid Explanation For Chase Claypool’s Slow Start

-

When the Chicago Bears traded for Chase Claypool, fans got excited. He instantly became the most talented wide receiver on the roster with his 6’4 frame and 4.4 speed. He might finally provide Justin Fields the go-to guy every quarterback needs when a big play is required. Yet things haven’t progressed as expected through the first two weeks. Claypool has three catches and a carry for less than 20 yards total. Part of the issue is he hasn’t played many snaps. Only 45. Some wonder if the coaches aren’t keen on him. Luke Getsy was quick to squash those rumors.

The offensive coordinator was asked about the receiver’s slow start and what issues he’s facing. Getsy explained it had nothing to do with Claypool’s talent or intelligence. He has more than enough of both. The primary issue is that this offense has lots of moving parts. It isn’t like other offenses where a wide receiver can plug in and play. There are many layered responsibilities for the receivers in this system, and it might require others to fill them because they have more experience in it. Claypool will get there. It’s a matter of being patient.

Luke Getsy deserves the benefit of the doubt here.

Don’t forget he echoed the same thing back when Fields went through his struggles in September and early October. The offensive coordinator insisted things were improving. It was a matter of letting the quarterback continue learning the system and build his experience each week. Things would work out. He was right. Fields is suddenly playing at a Pro Bowl level over the past six games. If Getsy says Claypool will come around, there is no reason not to trust him. Don’t forget this man was a wide receivers coach for several years in Green Bay. He knows how to handle that position.

To his credit, Claypool hasn’t voiced any complaints. While he wants to play, he understands the challenges of entering a new offense midway through the season. He must learn the playbook and build chemistry with Fields. The two have worked daily after practice, bringing the receiver up to speed. It won’t be a surprise if his production starts to improve in the next week or two. He could also get more involved as a blocker in the run game, something he likes doing.
