Lucas Patrick Admits Justin Fields Has Exceeded His Expectations

-

The thing to remember with Lucas Patrick is he has high standards at the quarterback position. Even though he came into the NFL as an undrafted free agent, he played his entire career with a future first-ballot Hall of Famer in Aaron Rodgers. So when he came to the Chicago Bears as their new starting center, that was the bar his mind was set at. He also knew that Justin Fields is a former 1st round pick.

So expectations were high. Patrick admitted as much during his media appearance following the team’s second OTA practice on Tuesday. He’d heard a lot of things about Fields. When asked about his first impressions, the veteran blocker admitted his surprise. Both at how fast and strong-armed the quarterback is. The talent is undeniable to him, and it offers excitement about where things could go in the coming months.

Things like this are always encouraging to hear.

Early video snippets from practice show Fields has made progress with his throwing motion. It seems more fluid and sped up than last season—all without losing his trademark down-the-field accuracy. Offensive coordinator Luke Getsy has been hard at work correcting several mechanical issues that popped up last year. Particularly the footwork. Everything from his stance before the snap to his drop-back is being tweaked.

At the same time, Lucas Patrick is working hard to forge chemistry with him with snaps from both under center and shotgun. The two are unfamiliar with each other and that exchange must be consistent if the offense is going to function at a higher level. It sounds like things are going well so far. Patrick has reportedly brought more energy and attitude to the offensive line. His single-minded approach to protecting the quarterback is also sure to earn points with his new quarterback.

Many feel the offensive line will make or break Fields in this pivotal second season. Patrick is the key to that.
