In case Chicago Bears fans weren’t already aware, Kyle Long isn’t the biggest fan of Matt Nagy. It is hard to identify when this animosity developed. Maybe it grew over time with a series of decisions made by the former head coach. It’s obvious the former Pro Bowl guard has little respect for Nagy’s offensive prowess, not to mention his sometimes lackadaisical coaching style. Still, one would think that kind of dislike had an origin story somewhere. Sure enough, Long finally spilled the beans after four years.
He was on Green Light with his brother Chris Long and two other guests. The topic of Nagy came up. Kyle had already downed some beers, so he must’ve been feeling pretty outspoken. So he launched into the story. It seems everything shifted on a fateful Sunday in 2019 when the Bears played the Raiders in London. Everybody remembers the game. Chicago fell behind 17-0 in the first half before storming back to take a 21-17 lead. Sadly a special teams penalty and multiple 4th down conversions saw Las Vegas score a late TD to steal the win 24-21.
Long revealed he came dangerously close to not playing that second half, and it was because of Nagy.
Kyle Long never played another game for the Bears.
He went on Injured Reserve the next week. The last image of himself playing in navy blue was hearing Nagy calling him gutless to his face. This after the offensive lineman had endured a string of brutal injuries. It’s little wonder he quickly soured on the head coach. It must’ve been particularly satisfying when the news came down that Nagy got fired after the 2021 season. Fittingly with another offense that couldn’t do anything. Now the coach is back to being an assistant in Kansas City, earning credit for basically carrying Patrick Mahomes’ cape.

The great irony is Kyle Long will outlive Nagy in the minds of Bears fans. He had far more success on the field and is way more beloved off it. He was easily their best offensive lineman of the 2010s. It is a crime that his career got cut so short. He will be one of their biggest what-ifs. Either way, this story is nothing short of amazing. While Nagy was likely trying to get a response from his players for a lackluster first half, he might’ve gone a bit overboard with comments like that. Another reminder that not all coaches get the true psychology of their jobs.
I truly hope that the Bears have football people in the right places now, not just a face. Nagy’s problem was he didn’t know shit about coaching a team. He was always trying to shove a square peg into a round hole. That was apparent by his ego making him think he was an offensive coordinator, which we all know how that went. Its good now he is holding a clipboard for his mentor.
Who is “Kyle Long”? A guy who played pretty good guard for all of 4 years, spent most of his career on the injured list because he didn’t have the dedication to be great and was too busy investing energy into being a libtard SJW along with his brother.
Surprised Kyle Long did not smack Nagy, or at least tell him to F- off, and retire on the spot. He is the last one who should have been called a “gutless bitch”.
The facts of the film show that Kyle Long became ineffective in his last year. In that “playoff” game against the Eagles the Bear O-Line was absolutely dominated by the Eagle D-Line. These are simple facts that can be verified by re-watching the film.
So Kyle Long lost his mojo because he became injury prone and soon retired. Nagy became desperate as he knew he was losing his job. Make of this what you will.
