Keyshawn Johnson Dispels Myth On Biggest Brian Flores Criticism

-

By the sound of things, Brian Flores is somebody that has the Chicago Bears intrigued. Insider Charles Robinson revealed that the organization is “very, very smitten” with him. The challenges represented though are somewhat difficult. Flores seems to want a significant say in the roster. He wants to be at the front of the franchise. That would mean the Bears have to find a GM that is comfortable working with him and taking that sort of behind-the-scenes role.

There is also the other issue to address. That of his plans for Justin Fields and the offense. It isn’t a secret what happened with Flores down in Miami, burning through two offensive coordinators and an assistant head coach in just two seasons. This leads many to wonder if he can implement a proper structure to develop a young quarterback. One person that came to the defense of the 40-year old coach is former wide receiver Keyshawn Johnson. He explained on his KJM show that there are so many reasons being overlooked for why that happened.

Many of them were out of Flores’ control.

This is true. Caldwell was meant to be a big part of the Dolphins’ offensive plan in 2019. That changed when he ran into an undisclosed health issue that forced him to take a step back. He served as a consultant for that season and then departed at the end of the year. It was here that Brian Flores made his one and only true change by firing Chad O’Shea as offensive coordinator. The reasons cited were he was trying to install too complex of an offense for the Dolphins’ inexperienced roster and did an unsatisfactory job teaching it.

So the head coach opted to hire the far more experienced Chan Gailey. Well, then the pandemic hit. The 2020 season became a nightmare to deal with because of the virus protocols and everything else. Gailey, who was 69-years old, became drained by the experience and decided to retire. Flores then opted for co-offensive coordinators in George Godsey and Eric Studesville this past season.

While it’s true the offense was a jumbled mess at times, it wasn’t because of constant meddling from the head coach. It was more bad luck than anything else. The fact Flores still produced better offenses than Matt Nagy during that stretch should be seen as noteworthy. Just something to keep in mind as the evaluation process continues.
