Kendall Williamson Says Fellow Bears Rookie Is Already Wreaking Havoc

-

The Chicago Bears got their first look at their 10-man draft class at rookie minicamps last weekend. One of them was 7th round pick Kendall Williamson, a safety from Stanford University. He didn’t waste time making an impact, snagging an interception off a tipped pass by fellow rookie Noah Sewell. It was nice to see, considering Williamson is probably the least talked-about pick in this class. Sadly it’s the byproduct of going so late. You won’t find him complaining, though. He’s beyond grateful for the opportunity.

Adam Rank interviewed him on The Sick Podcast, talking about his college career, when he got the draft call and other interesting tidbits. Then Rank threw him an unexpected question. Did anybody else distinguish themselves at the rookie minicamps from his perspective? Williamson pondered for a moment and then threw out the first name that came to mind.

Terell Smith.

He is the Bears’ 5th round cornerback out of Minnesota. It sounds like he hasn’t wasted time showing why several draft experts felt he was a steal.

Kendall Williamson knows the stock Smith comes from.

The two newest Bears were born in the exact same town of Snellville, Georgia. The same county produced star New Orleans Saints running back Alvin Kamara. So these two come from an area known for delivering good athletes. That offers hope the Bears might have something in Williamson and Smith. Their added town connection makes it even better. History shows teams tend to find better chemistry when several players come from the same region.

Hearing Smith having success right out of the gate is encouraging. Few things make defenses better than a strong stable of cornerbacks. Experts said his blend of size, athleticism, and toughness would perfectly fit Matt Eberflus’ scheme. It seems he’s proving them right. As for Kendall Williamson, people would do well not to ignore him because of his draft status. He’s a good athlete with plenty of size and toughness too. If they take to the coaching well, the Bears’ secondary will not be one teams wish to play.
